The Feed Readiness Checklist
Every field AI Max reads on a Shopping feed, mapped to what breaks when it sits empty, from shipping weight to conversational attributes to multi-country currency.
Who this is for
- Shopify merchants scaling Shopping and PMax spend
- Operators turning AI Max on for the first time
- Anyone selling into more than one country or currency
Why this exists
AI Max reads a feed to decide what it can say about a product, not only whether to bid on it. A populated field turns into a matched query or a confident answer. An empty one turns into a locked-out product or a guess. This is the field-by-field pass Ad-Lab runs before trusting AI Max with a catalog.
The feed is the input, not a formality
Every check below maps to a real field in the feed export. Pull the live feed from Merchant Center, not what sits in the store admin. Feed rules and supplemental feeds mean the two can disagree, and disagreement is where the breaks hide.
1. Shipping and fulfillment fields
2. Identifiers
3. Fields answer surfaces read first
4. Custom labels as budget routing
5. Multi-country and currency
What breaks when the field sits empty
| Field | What happens when it's empty | Where the damage shows |
|---|---|---|
| Shipping weight | The platform estimates or defaults, and the number in the ad rarely matches the number at checkout | Cart abandonment at the shipping step |
| GTIN | The product can't be matched to its manufacturer data | Comparison surfaces and any answer that depends on identifier matching |
| Product highlights | There's nothing to summarize, so the first real information comes from the full description or nowhere at all | The Shopping ad itself, and any short answer surfaced before a click |
| Conversational attributes | No structured answer to what it's made of, what it fits, or what else is needed | Any answer surface fielding a follow-up question the description never anticipated |
| Custom labels | Asset group and campaign filters fall back to matching the whole catalog | Budget spreads evenly across margin tiers instead of routing to the ones worth more |
| Multi-country currency | The feed declares one currency while checkout charges another | Deactivation in the mismatched country with no visible error to flag it |
The ten-minute weekly diagnostics routine
Open Diagnostics first
Check the item issues count against last week's number. A rising count on a catalog that hasn't changed size is the earliest signal something upstream broke.
Scan the top three disapproval reasons
Confirm they're the same three as last week and shrinking, not a new reason that appeared overnight. A new top reason usually traces back to a platform or theme update that touched the feed export.
Spot-check five SKUs against the checklist above
Rotate which five each week so the full catalog cycles through a manual check roughly every quarter, on top of whatever the automated feed rules are catching.
Log the approved-item count, not the feeling that things look fine
A trend line catches slow decay that a single glance at Diagnostics won't. Ten minutes a week is cheap insurance against a multi-day suspension nobody noticed forming.
What good looks like at the end of this checklist
Shipping weight is populated per SKU and matches the checkout total. GTIN, MPN, and brand cover every product that should carry them. Product highlights and structured attributes exist for the SKUs driving the most spend. Custom labels 0 through 4 are populated past 80% of active inventory and verified against the filters that read them. Every ship-to country has its own feed segment with correct currency and real stock. The weekly ten-minute routine is on someone's calendar, not this quarter's to-do list.
